Love for Noreen

I am so glad I got this picture of Noreen and Emily. This incredible women did so much more than deliver my baby. She gave me so much strength and calmness during such a life changing moment for me and my family. I am absolutely heartbroken for her family and the midwifery community of the passing of this beautiful women! I will forever cherish the photos I have from my homebirth and I am so glad she is in them.

I feel so blessed to have known this woman. Noreen was a part of our family from the home birth of my sister (and before), and then again at the birth of my son. Noreen was fiery, passionate, and strong, and yet calm, loving, and soft at the same time. I was lucky to spend time with her these past few months as we started to prepare for baby #2. Our appointments were filled with talk of everything but my pregnancy (well, we talked a bit about that too), and always ended with a hug. Her death comes as a huge shock, and an enormous loss. To say that you will be missed, Noreen, doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface. Love you, Noreen.

I first met Noreen when I was six as she was my moms midwife and was there to help welcome my youngest brother 29 years ago! Since then I have had the privilege to attend my sisters three births and my best friends birth all with Noreen. When the time came for me to choose pre-natal care back in 2010, there was no question in my mind that I wanted Noreen. When I was convincing my husband that I wanted a home birth with Noreen for my first, I believed I used the word ‘hero’ to describe her. It didn’t take long for him to see why I insisted. Her knowledge, compassion, and care is amazing. I had what I describe as the perfect birth and I attribute that to Noreen’s expertise and guidance. I am just weeks away from my second home birth with Noreen. I know it will be another amazing experience.

Noreen is truly a heroine. She will live forever in our hearts and her legacy will continue to empower mothers and fathers as it has since she started this wonderful midwifery journey decades ago.
I personally had never felt so empowered as when I birthed my 3 little babies.
During my first labor, I doubted myself for a moment, Noreen’s heavenly calmness and solid trust on me was absolutely empowering…I still clearly remember looking into her eyes and being able to see that she genuinely believed in me…the rest of the birth after that was a piece of cake…one of the most amazing days of our lives, thank you for being part of it Noreen 💕

November 2010 and February 2013 client!

I recommend Noreen to every pregnant woman I meet. Her calm professionalism put my husband and i at complete ease and I had an amazing birthing experience with her as my guide. Noreen has so much experience, meaning that I could trust her to get us through any difficulties if they arose. I had many people unfamiliar with Home Birth express concerns about the process but my faith never wavered after the first meeting I had with Noreen when she took me into her care. In addition to this I loved the group sessions she had where I could learn with other “soon to be” mothers. And Her passion is expressed in everything she says. She is an activist helping women have a safe birth experience the way they want it, not the way an institution thinks it should be. I did not know much about midwives when I got pregnant and I won the birthing lottery when Noreen called me back! Thank you.

My last pregnancy was very challenging emotionally and psychologically. I felt like an open wound and everything sent me off kilter. Noreen was always patient, kind, and compassionate. She supported me through phone calls and I was never rushed during appointments. She genuinely cared, I felt like she had my back. She was a crutch when i needed it the most. Looking after both my physical welfare (and that of the baby) and my emotional and psychological states as well. I believe Noreen’s comprehensive prenatal care helped me achieve the amazing, empowering birth of my son.

I had the privilege of witnessing Noreen support my sister through the delivery of her four children. It was the calming presence that Noreen brings with her that encouraged me to chose home births for myself with my two boys. It’s hard to explain but Noreen just seems to know exactly what you need when you are going through the labour/birthing process; all the right things are said and done.

I absolutely love Noreen!! Without her I never would have had my ‘perfect birth’ experience. After 3 disappointing hospital births and 1 unsuccessful home birth attempt with another midiwife, Noreen’s calm and reasurring ways kept me motivated and determined to achieve my goal to have my long desired home water birth. Words cannot express my love and gratitude for Noreen Walker. I would highly recommend Noreen to anyone in need of a great midwife!

Noreen is amazing! She’s calm, loving and also very funny. She trusted my body, my baby and myself. During birth she knew exactly the level of support I needed. Having Noreen as my Midwife made my birth as easy and calm as it was. (I could write a book on why I love Noreen!!!)

From the moment I met Noreen, I felt totally comfortable and at ease. It was wonderful to have her at the birth of our son on March 21, 2009. Her relaxed attitude and sense of humour really made our experience a memorable one. I will never forget Jagger’s birth and I am so happy that Noreen was there to be part of my lifelong memory. She is awesome!

We choose Noreen as our midwife because of her wealth of knowledge and years of experience. Noreen easily put both of us at ease and encouraged us to create the birth experience we wanted. She was there to support and give guidance but never told us what to do… Exactly what we wanted in a midwife!

November 2010/ July 2013 client

When I was pregnant with my first, I was cared for at the Shared Care Program, where Noreen was one of the midwives. I loved her straight-forward approach to birth, and her contagious spirit for catching babies.

My first pregnancy resulted in a transfer of care during labour because of thick meconium (at 7 cms no less!) I was so disappointed. The receiving OBGYN was not in favour of midwifery and truly made me feel awful about having made that choice. She was rude and ignorant, and made choices for me in labour that left me feeling violated and disrespected. Noreen later validated my feelings about the birth experience, but pushed me toward acceptance and growth… I will forever be thankful for that.

When the time came for my 2nd baby, I was so excited to be back at Shared Care, and Noreen really took the time to help me work through my fear of another transfer. She encouraged me to really envision my ideal birth this time, and told me to simply envision clear waters throughout my pregnancy. My business logo is a ripple, so I just really meditated on that a lot… Second baby was born in the waters at Stony Plain – awesome indeed.

Baby #3 was a surprise for us… and I was so thankful that Noreen was able to take me on as a private client this time around. This labour was so very fast (less than 1 hour total) and Noreen’s smiling face as I arrived at Stony Plain fully dilated was exactly what I needed! When this baby was born in the caul (within his amniotic sac still intact) I knew my experiences had come full circle.

I will forever be grateful for Noreen’s care, her infectious spirit, her calm presence, her enduring support, and her innate sense of knowing exactly what to say at the exact right time.

I had the most amazing luck to meet Noreen long before I was pregnant. From what I had heard and thought i knew about the birth experience, I was so terrified, I wasn’t even sure I wanted kids. And when my husband and I decided we would, I wanted ,”to be put out & wake me up when it’s over”. Of course when Noreen heard that, she began her magic. Gentle and humorous imparting of knowledge & information, relevant stories and sincere concern. There was not one question for which she did not have answers. And when she told me i could sit in a warm pool of water and sip wine while in labour- i was sold! (when the time actually came i did have the pool but no wine…) This was well before the easy access to information via Internet and “google” becoming a verb. I did make a few trips to the Library to verify & learn more. Noreen guided and inspired me. She truly empowered me to take ownership and responsibility for my birth experience. Besides her thoroughly experienced “hands on” birth skills, her humour and amazing insight into all aspects of this most important” passage “made for the most satisfying experiences possible ( she was my midwife for both my daughters). Noreen is an extraordinarily gifted midwife, who offers a unique perspective & vast experience. She has had a profound & lasting influence on me & my family-
We are forever thankful to Noreen !

We are tempted to call Noreen each month to book her in the hopes that we are pregnant again….but we know that isn’t fair. We loved Noreen, everything about her! Not only is she kind, funny and intelligent, she has skills that make a pregnant women feel at ease. At the end of the day, a skilled midwife with an angelic bedside manner ( angelic meaning she just may fly in on motorcycle) well this is what every family would want and would be blessed to have. WE LOVE Noreen!!!!!Thank you so much for the gift of our safe home birth.

I was part of the last month of shared care in Stony plain. Noreen was one of three wonderful midwives I got to have take care of me and my Sarah. But Noreen was the one that attended her birth. It was my first birth and it was fast and furious. She was calm and in control when it was needed and quiet and supportive when I was in my zone. When I had my second child this past November, having a midwife was a no brainer.
